Sinners makes Oscars history, shattering record from La La Land, Titanic

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners just pulled off a holy feat of Oscars excellence by shattering a long-held Academy Awards record to become the most-nominated movie in history.

Upon Thursday’s 98th Academy Awards nominations announcement, the Michael B. Jordan-starring vampire epic not only made strides for the often-ignored horror genre, but for films overall, as it racked up an astounding 16 nominations — the most nominations for one movie in Oscars history.

As a result, the film blew past prior record holders La La Land (2016), Titanic (1997), and the Hollywood classic All About Eve (1950), all of which tied for the most number of nominations, earning 14 nods each.

In addition to earning a nomination in the Academy’s brand new Best Casting category, Sinners dominated in a majority of the Oscars’ other competitive brackets. The film was one of the Academy’s 10 Best Picture nominees, and also earned recognition in categories like Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Original Song, Sound, Visual Effects, Original Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design, and Film Editing.

The film’s talent, including director Coogler and lead actor Jordan, were also recognized for their individual work on the project. Delroy Lindo, a beloved Hollywood veteran whom has long been ignored by the Academy, earned his first-ever nomination in the Supporting Actor category.

Wunmi Mosaku also earned her first nomination in the Supporting Actress category, for her powerful performance in the film that earned rave reviews on the critical circuit.

Released in April 2025, Sinners additionally scored big box office returns, particularly for a non-sequel, non-adapted original story. The film earned approximately $368 million globally, becoming one of the top-grossing movies of the year in addition to earning glowing critic and audience reviews.
